Dropping off the compost

In Loudoun, there is currently a compost drop off pilot program at the Loudoun County Landfill. It is in partnership with Key City Compost, which is a composting organization that will pick up the food waste and turn it into compost, and it is completely free. All you have to do is drop off your food scraps, and you will be making a difference and doing your part to reduce your carbon footprint.

The info graphic below comes directly from the Loudoun County Landfill's website and outlines what can and can not be composted. This list is specifically for this drop off location, so if you are planning to compost somewhere else, make sure you check what they accept. In addition, if you want to start an at home compost bin, many of the items on the 'accepted' list should not be composted at home, so please research what can and be composted at home.

Tip: Coordinate compost drop offs with your neighbors to reduce your CO2 emissions and save you and your neighbors time. Plus, it gets the word out about composting and is an incentive for your neighbors to compost!
