Frequently Asked Questions
Where do you store food before its dropped off?
You can store your food in a closed container on your counter, or in your freezer/ fridge. If you have meat or fish products, you should store the container in the fridge or freezer, but if not, it is just a matter of personal preference. Any container with a lid works, or you can buy a container made specifically to hold food scraps.
Who takes the food after it is dropped off?
If you drop off food at the Loudoun County Landfill, it will be picked up by Key Compost, which is a local composting organization.
What is the address to the landfill?
21101 Evergreen Mills Road
Leesburg, VA 20175
Is it free?
Yes, drop off is completely free!
How do I keep my food container clean?
To keep your container clean, make sure you wash it with soap and water every time you empty it. You can also line it with a compostable bag (but make sure when you drop off the compost you put only the compost in the bin, not the bag!).
Do I have to buy anything special to compost?
No! While there are things you can buy, none of it is required to compost. All you need is a container with a lid to store your compost. If you do want to buy a special compost bin to keep your food, this website has a few options.
When can I drop off my scraps
Mondays through Saturdays, from 8AM until 4PM. The landfill is also closed on most federal holidays, check their website to see the specific holidays they are closed on.
